How to Choose Your First Team
New players often build teams by picking their favorite Pokemon. That works in casual play, but ranked battles punish teams that share weaknesses or lack a clear win condition. The teams below solve both problems: they cover different offensive types and include speed control, damage, and support.

The Balanced Core
Best all-around team for new players
Start with the three strongest picks in the format and add a self-sustaining support. This team teaches every core concept — speed control, pivoting, Intimidate, and healing — without relying on complicated combos.

Simple weather team that hits hard
Pelipper sets rain; Mega Swampert abuses Swift Swim to outspeed almost everything. Archaludon provides a defensive Steel backbone, and Grimmsnarl sets screens so your sweepers survive longer.

4 Rules Every Beginner Team Should Follow
Pick 1 Speed Control
Every beginner team should have Tailwind, Trick Room, or a very fast Choice Scarf user. Without speed control, you rely on raw stats and lose to better-prepared teams.
Cover Weaknesses, Not Just Types
Do not stack four Pokemon weak to Ice, Fairy, or Ground. One shared weakness is fine if you have a clear plan; two or more is asking to be swept.
Have a Damage Plan
At least two Pokemon should be able to deal serious damage. Supports are great, but teams with no win condition stall out and lose to better tanks.
Test Before You Invest VP
Use Trial Scout to test a Pokemon for 22 hours before spending VP. Beginner teams should be cheap to assemble so you can pivot quickly as the meta changes.
