Two New Mega Evolutions, Two Different Play Styles

For the first time in Pokemon Champions, Raichu can Mega Evolve — and it has two distinct Mega forms to choose from. Each one redefines how Raichu plays in competitive doubles:

  • Mega Raichu X - Ability: Electric Surge. Sets Electric Terrain, boosting Electric moves by 30% and preventing sleep.
  • Mega Raichu Y - Ability: No Guard. Every move used by and against Mega Raichu Y hits with 100% accuracy.

Both are free during the mobile launch event. Pick up your Raichu, Raichunite X, and Raichunite Yfrom your in-game mailbox before September 1, 2026.

How to Get Mega Raichu (Free)

  1. Log in to Pokemon Champions on Switch or mobile between June 17 and September 1, 2026.
  2. Open your in-game mailbox (Menu → Mailbox / Mystery Gift).
  3. Claim Raichu, Raichunite X, and Raichunite Y. All three are sent automatically.
  4. Equip Raichunite X or Raichunite Y (only one at a time) and Mega Evolve during battle.

Tip: The Raichu you receive comes in a Cherish Ball. It cannot be transferred to Pokemon HOME, so treat it as a Champions-exclusive Pokemon.

Mega Raichu X - The Electric Terrain Sweeper

Ability: Electric Surge (sets Electric Terrain for 5 turns when entering battle).

What it does: The moment Mega Raichu X switches in or is sent out at the start of the battle, the field becomes Electric Terrain. While active:

  • All Electric-type moves deal 30% more damage.
  • No Pokemon on the ground can fall asleep (moves like Spore, Sleep Powder, and Yawn are blocked).
  • This is a huge team-saver against Amoonguss and Breloom, two of the format's best sleep users.

Best moveset for beginners:

  • Thunderbolt - Reliable STAB Electric damage.
  • Volt Switch - Pivot out and bring a teammate in safely.
  • Focus Blast - Coverage against Ground-types that resist Electric.
  • Protect - Survive a turn and let Electric Terrain's boost apply to teammates.

Item: Raichunite X. Nature: Timid (max Speed). EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe.

Mega Raichu Y - The Accuracy Lock

Ability: No Guard. Every move used by Mega Raichu Y and every move used against it always hits.

What it does: This is a high-risk, high-reward ability. Your own 80% or 90% accuracy moves (Thunder, Hurricane, Focus Blast) all hit. But neither you nor your opponent can miss each other — so any OHKO move, status move, or accuracy-drops do not save your opponent.

Best moveset for beginners:

  • Thunder - 70% accuracy normally. With No Guard, it always hits AND has a 30% paralysis chance. Devastating.
  • Focus Blast - 70% accuracy normally. With No Guard, it always hits and crushes Steel-types like Kingambit and Archaludon.
  • Substitute - Use a Speed-tier turns of safety while setting up.
  • Protect - Defensive pivot turn. Be careful — Protect does not "miss" against No Guard users, but the opponent can still hit through it with status or spread damage.

Item: Raichunite Y. Nature: Hasty or Naive (+Speed, -Sp.Def or -Def). EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe.

Which Mega Raichu Should You Use?

PickBest ForTeam Synergy
Mega Raichu XSafer, team-oriented playPair with another Electric-type teammate (like Wash Rotom) to stack terrain boosts.
Mega Raichu YAggressive, sweeper playPair with redirection support like Maushold (Follow Me) to guarantee Thunder hits.

Beginner recommendation: Start with Mega Raichu X. Electric Surge is more forgiving and the 30% damage boost makes your whole team better.

Sample Beginner Team Featuring Mega Raichu X

This team is built around Mega Raichu X's Electric Terrain. Each teammate benefits from being immune to sleep:

  1. Mega Raichu X - Electric Surge, Thunderbolt, Volt Switch, Focus Blast, Protect
  2. Wash Rotom - Levitate pivot, Hydro Pump, Volt Switch, Will-O-Wisp, Protect
  3. Garchomp - Earthquaker that does not fear Spore users. Scale Shot, Earthquake, Dragon Claw, Protect
  4. Maushold - Follow Me redirection, super-effective against Fake Out leads

The Electric Terrain turns off Spore from Amoonguss and Breloom — common anti-Garchomp tech. This single change makes your team much harder to disrupt in Regulation M-A and M-B.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get BOTH Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y?

Yes. You receive one Raichu and both Mega Stones (Raichunite X and Raichunite Y) from the gift. Only one Mega Stone can be equipped at a time, so swap based on your team needs.

Does Mega Raichu count against my one-Mega-per-team rule?

Yes. You can only Mega Evolve one Pokemon per battle under the Omni Ring's one-Mega rule. If you bring Mega Raichu X, you cannot also bring another Mega like Charizard-Mega-Y.

Is the gift Raichu any good competitively?

It depends on its IVs and nature. Most event Pokemon are usable but not perfect. For competitive play, you may still want to scout a higher-IV Raichu. The Mega Stones are the real prize — they are otherwise unavailable during the event window.

When does the event end?

September 1, 2026 at 6:49 PM PDT (or September 2, 9:59 UTC+8). After that, Raichunite X and Y may become available in the in-game shop, but the free gift will be gone.
